SCENE ONE – IN THE STREETS OF VERONA
In the streets of Verona.
Lord Capulet and Lord Montague enter and face each other from each side.
| Lord Capulet | There is Old Montague. |
| Lord Montague | You villain Capulet! |
| Montagues | Down with the Capulets! |
| Capulets | Down with the Montagues! |
| Lord Capulet | Give me my long sword! |
| Lady Capulet | Why do you want a sword? |
| Lady Montague | (To Lord Montague) Stay here. You are too old to fight. |
| Lord Montague | (To Lady Montague) Don’t hold me. Let me go! |
Abraham and Sampson move forward and confront each other.
| Abraham | Are you biting your thumb at me? |
| Sampson | I am biting my thumb. |
| Abraham | Are you biting your thumb at me? |
| Sampson | I am biting my thumb at you. |

The Capulets
Don’t bite your thumb at us.
There’s nothing to discuss.
Capulets we’ve work to do,
To spill the blood of Montague!
The Montagues
You watch out Capulets.

The ruler enters.
| Ruler | Stop, Montagues! Stop, Capulets! You are enemies to the peace. Go home! (To Lord Montague and Lord Capulet) You two stay here. |
| Lord Montague | Yes, my Lord. |
| Lord Capulet | Yes, my Lord. |
| Ruler | Shake hands. |
They shake hands reluctantly.
| Ruler | Next time I will punish you. |
| Lord Montague | Yes, my Lord. |
| Lord Capulet | Yes, my Lord. |
They leave.
