SCENE TWO – AT THE PARTY

Juliet, the nurse and Lady Capulet are getting ready for a party at the Capulet house.

Nurse	Oh! You look beautiful, Juliet.
Juliet	Thank you, Nurse.
Lady Capulet	You are ready, my daughter.
Juliet	Thank you, mum.

Mercutio and Romeo enter.

Mercutio	Cheer up, Romeo!
Romeo	I can’t.
MERCUTIO	Look at all the lovely girls.
ROMEO	I am not interested.

Romeo lets his mask fall.
Tybalt sees Romeo and Mercutio.

Tybalt	Montagues! How dare you come here!
Lady Capulet	Leave them alone, Tybalt.
Tybalt	They are our enemy.
Lady Capulet	This is my house. Do what I say!

Tybalt leaves.
Romeo and Juliet see each other.

LOVERS SONG

Is this real? Do I sleep?
Can it be I’m falling deep?

In her eyes I see a light
That teaches torches to burn bright.

Why can I not turn away?
Here he comes! Oh what to say?
Do I know him? He is charming!
He is graceful and disarming

And now love is here to stay
Mark this moment, mark this day.
This is where it all begins.
Hear the angels as they sing!

Romeo	Hey, Nurse… who is that woman?
Nurse	That is Juliet. You are in her house.
Romeo	Oh no! She is a Capulet!

Romeo leaves.

Juliet	Nurse! Who is that going out of the door?
Nurse	That is Romeo. He is the only son of your enemy.
Juliet	Oh no! He is a Montague!

Juliet leaves.
